What Cannabis Products Are Legal In Canada?
On October 17, 2018, the Cannabis Act passed in Canada. On this day, it became legal to buy cannabis products in Canada. Current federal cannabis regulations allow commercial production and sale of the following:
Fresh & Dried Cannabis Flower Buds
Often known as “bud”. These are the trichome-covered flowers of the female cannabis plants. It’s also the part of the plant that contains the THC, cannabinoids and terpenes that get you high. You can consume Cannabis flowers by smoking them in a pipe, as a pre-roll, vaporized or used in edibles.
Oils or Capsules
Cannabis oils and capsules contain extracted cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids from cannabis plants. The extracted concentrations are typically well-controlled, making it easy to calculate doses.
Seeds & Plants for Cultivation
Cannabis legalization in Canada allows residents to cultivate their own plants. Allowing them to purchase and grow their own marijuana seeds and plants. Adults of legal age can cultivate up to 4 cannabis plants per household (not per person). There may be additional restrictions applied to personal cannabis cultivation. Be sure to look up the rules in the province or territory that you live in.
Edibles, Extracts & Topicals
Cannabis Edibles
Edibles are foods and drinks with infused cannabis extracts. Cannabis edibles can come in various products. These include beverages, baked goods, chocolates, gummies, and other candies or lozenges.
Cannabis Extracts
Extracts include a broad range of concentrated marijuana products. These can contain higher levels of THC & CBD compared to levels found in cannabis plants. These levels will vary in cannabis extracts and which you can smoke, vape or ingest.
Cannabis Topicals
Cannabinoid-infused oils, shampoos, lotions and creams. Apply these direct to your skin, hair or nails. THC and CBD profiles or cannabis topicals, as with extracts, vary in their levels. But, CBD-based topicals seem to be the most popular.
Who Can Legally Purchase Cannabis Products in Canada?
Ordering online or purchasing through a provincial or private retailer? Remember, the minimum legal age to buy, possess and consume cannabis in Canada is 18 in Alberta. Other provinces in Canada have a minimum age of 19. Except Québec, which has raised their legal age to 21 and older. Remember, sharing with minors is a criminal offense. Everyone in the group you’re consuming cannabis with must be of legal age.
Where Can I Buy Canadian Cannabis?
The Canadian Cannabis Act made the sale of recreational cannabis legal nationwide. Yet, it left distribution and other restrictions up to the provincial governments. For example, each province has different regulations on the online sale of cannabis. Some provinces allow private retailers to sell their products online. Others have a provincial government-run website. So, make sure you investigate your province’s guidelines when it comes to buying cannabis. All provinces and territories, except for Nunavut, allow marijuana sales in licensed stores. Recreational cannabis in Nunavut is currently only sold online by the province.
